Spring is finally here! Flowers are blooming, leaves are returning to the trees, and birds are singing and making nests. It’s a beautiful time when nature is busy with the messy hustle and bustle of blooming and growing and rebuilding, which means some of that messy hustle and bustle might end up in places you don’t want it–like your sewer system. When spring comes, it’s important to check out your sewer system to keep it free of debris. Here are a few ways you can prepare your sewer for spring!
1. Check Your Drains and Gutters
One favorite place for leaves, flower petals, and other signs of spring to hang out is in your drains and gutters. They tend to collect there and then migrate into your sewer pipes, causing clogs. Clogs lead to backups, and backups lead to leaks and floods that can damage the foundation of your home. Sometimes, birds even make nests in drain pipes. That’s why it’s a good idea to clean out your gutters and drains when spring rolls around.
2. Check Your Sprinklers and Outdoor Plumbing
Turn on your sprinklers and outdoor faucets and check for signs of leaks. After not having used this part of your plumbing in several months, it’s a good idea to make sure nothing got damaged due to winter weather or frozen water. Standing water freezes more easily than flowing water, which is why water in unused pipes is more at risk for freezing. When a pipe freezes, it expands, which can cause cracks and other damage. If you notice any issues when you turn on your outdoor faucets, call an expert right away before the problem gets worse (and so you can enjoy your outdoor plumbing!).
3. Have a Video Inspection Done
Inspections of your sewer pipes are crucial in order to truly assess their condition and whether any issues may be brewing. By the time you see signs of a backup or clog, significant damage has likely already occurred to your sewer pipes and possibly even to your home. The key is to catch these issues before they become a major problem.
